Spinal screening will be conducted for your child's class Wednesday, March 27th, 2019.
The purpose of spinal screening is to detect the signs of abnormal curves of the spine at the earliest stages so that the need for treatment can be determined. We look specifically for Scoliosis, a sideways twisting of the spine and Kyphosis, an exaggerated rounding of the upper back which is often confused with poor posture. These abnormalities can usually be detected in children between 10 and 14 years of age. Many cases are mild and require only ongoing observation by a physician upon diagnosis. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent the development of a severe condition that can affect one's health and appearance.
The procedure for screening is simple. Boys and girls will be seen separately and individually.
According to Texas state law, ALL children in grades 6 and 9, must receive spinal screening. Parents will be notified of the results of the screening ONLY if professional follow-up is necessary. However, feel free to call me with any questions or concerns you may have.
***ALL STUDENTS MUST REMOVE THEIR SHIRT FOR THIS EXAM. FOR THIS REASON, WE REQUEST THAT GIRLS WEAR A HALTER TOP, TUBE TOP, SPORTS BRA, OR A SWIMSUIT UNDERNEATH THEIR SHIRT ON EXAM DAY AND BOYS CAN WEAR TIGHT UNDERARMOUR IF IT WILL MAKE THEM FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE.
Thank you for your cooperation. If you have any questions, please call (940)782-3942.
